M is for shopping with Mom — or Dad…
Of course, grocery shopping is a Valuable Educational Experience. The content of the education, however, may vary depending on which parent leads the expedition.
First, a typical shopping trip with Mom:
- Overriding value: to squeeze as many meals as possible out of every dollar spent.
- Educational activities: Finding the best price on an item (use a coupon or buy store brand?), figuring price per ounce, scanning ingredients for allergens, getting a mix of fresh produce with varying shelf lives… so we can avoid food waste at home, avoiding additives, etc.
- Typical items purchased: brown rice, bagged apples, past-due bananas (Hey! Those make great smoothies!), dry beans, bulk oatmeal, bulk anything, baking ingredients, milk for making yogurt
And now, a typical trip with Dad:
- Overriding value: to have fun together, talk to as many people as possible, and bring home a delicious, ready-to-serve lunch so Mom won’t have to cook
- Educational activities: taste testing at the deli counter, learning about apple varieties from the produce manager, practicing social interactions in every aisle
- Typical items purchased: fresh-squeezed juice, deli meats and cheese, luxurious fruits like mangoes and cherries, ice cream, Pirate Booty, egg nog, and a candy treat
Which is better? My guess is – neither. There’s plenty of time for fun AND frugal. But I bet you can guess which parent rarely shops alone!
Hilarious! Rings a little true on this end, too!
Oh my gosh…I laughed hysterically! Sounds like this household as well in many ways. Thanks for starting out my day on such a good note!
Funny! I totally hear you, girl! I get a little crazy shopping to find deals and searching for the best deals gets in the way of the fun! I usually sneak out and leave the antics at home with Dad! But how sad is it that sometimes “going to the store with Mom” counts as a date?
LOL!! My husband I shop totally differently, too. =p Lately I’ve taken to leaving them all at home and shopping by myself. =) But then… they’re missing out on all of those learning opportunities. 😉
My kids go along when we plan on a lunch out or something, but they do help with the shopping! I don’t really go much on the learning side of things but I have them check shelf prices. Dad is always good for fun trips and Momma for the boring ones, but we will divide the list and the kids get to help gather things for the cart. They think that’s fun! 🙂
I can totally relate to this Mom/ Dad scenario! Loved reading your Blog!
